ABSTRACT:
Road accidents due to alcohol-impaired driving remain one of the most serious threats to public safety worldwide. Despite strict traffic regulations and awareness campaigns, drunk driving continues to cause fatalities and severe injuries. This paper presents the design and implementation of an Alcohol Detector and Engine Locking System using an Arduino Uno microcontroller and an MQ-3 alcohol sensor. The proposed system detects alcohol concentration from the driver’s breath and automatically disables the engine ignition if the detected level exceeds a predefined safety threshold. A relay-based control mechanism ensures electrical isolation between the control unit and the engine, while visual and audio indicators provide immediate alerts. The system is economical, reliable, and easy to integrate into existing vehicle systems. Experimental validation confirms effective alcohol detection, fast response time, and reliable engine locking, demonstrating the system’s potential to significantly reduce alcohol-related road accidents.
